Guide
The tile calculation formula, explained.
The number of tiles you need is simple: room area ÷ area of one tile. For a 10 ft × 12 ft floor with 2 ft × 2 ft tiles that is 120 ÷ 4 = 30 tiles.
Real installs never come out exact. Add 5–15% for cuts, breakage and future repairs — more for diagonal layouts, small tiles and irregular rooms. That buffer is built into every estimate here.
For walls, measure each wall's length × height, add them together, then subtract windows and doors. Our calculator does all of it for you.
Room-by-room
Recommended waste & sizes
| Room | Good sizes | Waste |
|---|---|---|
Bathroom Smaller anti-skid tiles, water exposure, cuts around fittings. | 12×12 in · 300×300 mm | 10% |
Kitchen Backsplashes and cutouts around cabinets and islands. | 12×12 in · 300×600 mm | 10% |
Living Room Large-format tiles reduce grout lines and look seamless. | 24×24 in · 600×1200 mm | 8% |
Balcony / Patio Irregular shapes and angled cuts need a bigger buffer. | 18×18 in · 600×600 mm | 15% |
Hallway Long runs with door-frame adjustments at both ends. | 12×24 in · 300×600 mm | 7% |
Backsplash Mosaic and small tiles need many more cuts per square foot. | 2×2 in · 100×100 mm | 15% |
About This Tool
Why you can trust this tile calculator
There are hundreds of tile calculators online, but most only multiply a length by a width and call it done. This tool was built to behave like a real installer: it accounts for grout lines, cutting waste and layout patterns, deducts window and door openings, and adds realistic estimates for grout, adhesive and cost. The result is a free tile calculator you can trust for quoting, ordering and budgeting — whether you measure in feet or metres, plan in square feet or square meters, and whether you are tiling a floor, a wall, a ceiling or a shower.
Tile calculator square feet
For most projects the number that matters is tile calculator square feet — how much surface a room covers and how many tiles that needs. Enter the length and width of your space and the tool instantly converts it to square feet (or m²), then divides by the area of one tile to give the exact tile count. It also shows the "with waste" total, so the quantity you order includes the tiles you will cut, drop on delivery, or need years later for repairs. No round-up guesswork, no ordering short.
Floor tile calculator
Floors are the most common job, and this floor tile calculator handles anything from a compact hallway to a large open-plan living room. Choose your room size, pick a tile size (6×6, 12×12, 12×24 or 24×24 inches, or 300×300, 400×400, 600×600 and 600×1200 mm), then set your grout gap and waste percentage. The estimate recalculates live on every keystroke. A plain tile calculator for floor work gives you one number; this one also gives you boxes, grout, adhesive and cost for the exact floor you measured.
Wall tile calculator
Walls are where most calculators go wrong, because they pretend a wall is just another big rectangle. Our wall tile calculator lets you enter each wall's height and width separately and then deducts windows and doors, so you never pay for tiles that cover openings. It works with feet and inches or metres and centimetres, and the wall tile calculator square feet output matches exactly what you will buy at the store. For kitchen backsplashes, pick the small mosaic presets and raise waste to 15% to cover the many small cuts around outlets and cabinets.
Ceiling tile calculator
Ceilings follow the same area math as floors, and the ceiling tile calculator counts tiles across the full ceiling surface, with light fixtures and vents absorbed into your waste buffer. Most dropped ceilings use large square tiles, so the built-in presets make planning a commercial or basement ceiling quick and accurate.
Shower tile calculator
The shower tile calculator is one of the most requested tools here, and it is built to handle a shower floor plus one, two or three shower walls. Enter each wall's height and width, deduct the shower opening, and the estimate accounts for a real alcove rather than an imaginary rectangle. Need a tile calculator for shower walls only? Switch the surface to wall and enter each side. Whatever you call it — tile calculator shower, bathroom tiles, or a full wet area — the grout estimate also reflects the reality that small wall tiles and mosaic floors use more grout per square foot.
Bathroom tile calculator
Bathrooms are almost always a mix — a floor, walls and a shower area — which is why this bathroom tile calculator supports multiple sections in a single estimate. Add a floor section, add wall sections, add a shower alcove, and everything merges into one total you can take straight to the tile shop. Add the tiles-per-box and price-per-box, and the bathroom tile calculator turns the whole job into an instant cost in your own currency.
Everything above is instant and completely free — no sign-up, no pop-ups, no account required. If you are quoting a contractor or ordering tiles online, the print and share tools give you a clean summary of tiles, boxes, grout, adhesive and cost in seconds.
