Bathroom Tile Calculator
Quick answer: measure the floor, then each wall, then the shower alcove as three separate sections. Add them together, subtract the door, divide by the area of one tile and add 10–15% waste. The calculator below opens pre-set for a bathroom floor at 12×12 in and merges every section into one tile, box, grout and cost total.
How it works
How to Calculate Bathroom Tile
Enter each surface on its own line
Floor, the four walls and the shower alcove each get their own line, which keeps the pan steeper waste and the dry floor flatter waste from averaging each other out.
Set tile sizes, gap and waste
Floors and walls usually take different tiles, so set each one. Give wet areas 15 to 20% waste and dry walls 10 to 15%, then set the grout gap in millimetres.
Read tiles, boxes, grout and cost
Results update live: tile and box counts per surface, grout and adhesive in kilograms, and a cost total once you enter a price per box.
Calculate bathroom tile in square feet, surface by surface
A bathroom is never one rectangle. Work in square feet per surface: a 5×8 ft floor is 40 sq ft, the long walls are 5 ft wide each and the short walls 8 ft, all at ceiling height. Enter each as its own line so you can see where the money goes — the floor and the shower surround usually cost more than the visible walls because of the cuts.
Walls, floor and shower alcove run separately
The bathroom wall is not the same job as the floor: different tile, different grout gap, different waste. Add one wall section per wall, a floor section, and a separate shower alcove if the tile changes there. The calculator sums all of them into a single order while keeping each surface’s waste rule intact — that is how you avoid buying floor waste on a wall run that needed none.
Deduct only the big openings
Subtract the door and any window over about 10 sq ft. Leave the rest in: outlets, switches, the toilet flange, the vanity pedestal and the shower valve each eat a cut tile, so removing them from the count double-charges you for the cuts around them. The openings panel handles the two that genuinely save tile.
Wet-area rules: slope, grip and grout
The shower floor needs a fall of about 1/4 in per foot to the drain, which means every tile in the pan is a wedge. Use 2×2 in or mosaic there, and expect 20% waste instead of 10%. Wet floors also want more grout lines for grip, so the grout estimate rises too. For a floor-only project, open thefloor tile calculatorinstead and start from the room presets.
